DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Hayden W. Wheeler w/dial having photo emulsion of Hayden W. Wheeler himself, "H.W.W.Co. Maiden Lane." marked mvt, 17J, 16S, gold-filled OF recase with fancy initials to rear, white enamel DS dial with applied photo emulsion, SW-SS, wavy line pattern nickel damascene, s#75770. Please see our photos of another image of Hayden W. Wheeler for comparison purposes which is found within Howard Lasser's excellent "The Story of Hayden W. Wheeler" article in the October, 2005 issue of the NAWCC Bulletin. The dial emulsion of this example featuring Hayden W. Wheeler himself is extremely rare, if not unique, and makes this a superb centerpiece for a Hamilton collector's set of Hayden W. Wheeler watches. The total production of this 17 jewel open face pendant-set Hayden W. Wheeler movement is believed to be 600 made. From the collection of Charlie Winters.
CONDITION: Mvt: Runs slightly sluggishly, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous plates with few scattered micro-fine scratches, small marring around stem detent screw, minor oxide to winding wheels and regulator assembly; excellent dial though with a somewhat yellowed overall tone as the full dial surface was coated during the emulsion process and the emulsion material has aged to this tone, some scattered mild fine to micro-fine scratches, some bits of dark residue on the dial surface in areas around and outside the minute chapter, photo emulsion with superb detail and only a tiny spot of image loss to the lapel of Wheeler's coat, please note we emphatically recommend against any attempt to clean this dial as any soaking or rubbing of its surface would likely destroy the fragile photo emulsion; fine-plus hands; case shows very little wear, some gouging to band edge adjacent rear lip, few tiny nicks to band bottom, no dents, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $600 - $1200
